Suffering

The gospels give us several accounts of Jesus and his disciples in boats on the waters. Their situations are often challenging, but Jesus intervenes to save and protect them. The Christian life can often experience turbulent times, and like the disciples, we turn to Jesus to calm the storms. But there can also be times when we seem alone in a sea of darkness, unable to find the assuring presence of Jesus to help us. On the cross, Jesus cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”. Jesus is praying Psalm 22, which ends with the verses, “When I cried out, he listened and did not turn away.” Alone in the boat on a sea of darkness is where we learn the true meaning of faith in Jesus.
